OCS Day 76-77 (22/AUG/09 – 23/AUG/09)

And that was the last weekend of OCS.
It was a fairly typical weekend. We were released Friday evening on pass, and this time we don’t have to be back until 0800 Monday morning. Not a problem for me, as I will be staying in the barracks all weekend. But quite a few people had their spouses come down, and they were quite obviously not in the barracks, but in hotel rooms.
Anyway, Friday night we went to see the movie Inglorious Bastards, the Tarantino movie. It was very good, about what you would expect from a Tarantino movie, but I wasn’t blown away by it by any means. I was expecting a little more of an action film with a Tarantino twist; instead it was a Tarantino film with an action-film twist, if that makes any sense. In any case, it was good and quite worth watching.
Saturday morning then we had our community service project. Basically we just went over to the local VFW and did busy work for an hour, doing whatever they needed done. I finished trimming some bushes (the platoon before us had started) with a hedge trimmer, then helped pick up grass and leaves that the lawn-mowers and trimmers had thrown on the tar. They then fed us, serving hotdogs, hamburgers, and a wild pig they had caught! I then helped wash some tables and clean up some garbage, and that was about the extent of it. It was nothing sexy, like helping build a house or something, but I’m sure the VFW appreciated it.
Saturday night we went bowling, which is always fun, though I couldn’t seem to find my shot all night. Don’t get me wrong, I’m usually a 140-150 bowler, so nothing great, but I was having trouble cracking 100 all night. I might have to work on that…
Today, then, I just used to get caught up on writing, start packing, etc. It was again a fairly relaxing evening, and it was nice not to have to worry about formation tonight. It’s a small thing, bot having to get back into PT’s at 2000, but it was noticed and appreciated. Finally, I just relaxed because my vacation is almost over. Vacation, you say? Why yes, because as of Thursday I return to being a father to three children!

I just wanted to thank you for this site, as have many others. I report to OCS 22NOV09 after almost 4 years of enlisted service. I tend to keep myself informed as best as possible on any future endeavor, and your site was awesome in providing up to date, day to day information. Thanks once again.

Thanks, your gratitude is much appreciated. I came down here pretty close to clueless, and while it was not my main reason for doing this, I wrote this journal partly to let others know what to expect. Thanks for reading!
